Bristol Channel Crossing

A group of 8 students from Cardiff University Kitesurfing Club are putting their kitesurfing skills and endurance levels to the test by kitesurfing across the Bristol Channel!

The event will be held between the 1st – 14th April, with the exact date to be confirmed when wind reports are released nearer the time. We will keep everyone posted on this so watch this space.

The 9-mile trip, starting at Penarth, Cardiff, and finishing at Weston-Super-Mare, will see the group facing waves, ships, strong winds (hopefully nice 12m wind) and debris while hopefully having the time to take in the view of Steep Holm and Flat Holm, 2 islands along the route. The 8 intrepid kitesurfers will be supported by the university’s own Sub-Aqua and Sailing clubs who have kindly donated ribs and drivers for the support boats. The event is also supported by Cardiff University and its Union as well as the local RNLI boatmen.

Money raised from the event will be split between two charities: The MS Society and RNLI.

The MS Society is a charity particularly close to the heart of CUKC since one of its members suffers from the disease and he is one of the reasons that this event was thought up and why the club is so passionate to complete the event and raise as much money as possible.

The MS Society is the UK’s largest charity dedicated to supporting everyone whose life is touched by MS. It provides respite care, a freephone MS Helpline, grants for home adaptations and mobility aids, education and training, MS specialist nurses and a wide range of information. Local branches cater for people of all ages and interests and are run by people with direct experience of MS. The MS Society also funds over 50 vital MS research projects in the UK.

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. They provide a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service around the coasts of the UK and RoI, as well as a seasonal lifeguard service on many of the busiest beaches in England and Wales. The RNLI also works to promote sea and beach safety.
